The history of Ophthalmological Center of Zhongshan University (Zhongshan University Eye Hospital) first dates back to the ophthalmology Bureau, founded in 1835 by Peter Parker, the earliest Western Hospital in China. In 1953, the Zhongshan University School of medicine and south of the Five Ridges Medical College merged Southern China Medical College, two hospital of ophthalmology with ophthalmology group of Southern China Medical College; Medical College of ophthalmology in 1954, Guanghua incorporated Ophthalmology Group of Southern China Medical College; in 1956, with the renamed Guangzhou Medical College Southern China School of medicine, ophthalmology department was renamed Guangzhou Medical College Department of Ophthalmology Group; 1957, renamed the Department of Ophthalmology of Zhongshan medical college. On this basis, in October 1965, Professor Chen Yaozhen and Professor Mao Wenshu founded the ophthalmology hospital of Zhongshan medical college. This is the first eye hospital affiliated to Chinese universities.
